Course: Safety & Shop Skills

Course Description
This course will provide theory and hands-on training on basic skills and safety. Students will receive detailed training on shop safety such as how to lift heavy material properly, working near electric machinery, different types of fire extinguishers, welding safety, and hand tools. Students will be required to pass a written safety exam before they are allowed to work in the shop.

Certificate
Completion of this course certifies proficient diesel safety skills based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Technical Competency is available upon request.

This course fulfills requirements for the following Programs:

Competencies (skills you will learn)

  • Identify basic tools
  • Know how to operate different types of fire extinguishers
  • Operate electric machinery ( drill press, cut off saws, electric hand drills )
  • Basic welding. Learn to use different types of welders
  • Learn how to charge a battery
  • The use of measuring instruments
  • learn how different types of fasteners are used
  • the use of different types of torque wrenches

Course Structure
This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.

Course Length
The estimated length of this course is 60 hours.
Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.

Specific Course Admission Requirements
There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Transportation Technology Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services.

Course Location and Schedule
West Valley Training Center: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday - Thursday,
                                           8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday

Tuition and Fees
Tuition is based on the number of enrolled classroom hours. High school students are exempt from tuition, but are responsible for course and program fees and the cost of textbooks.
