Course: Preventive Maintainance & Basic Services

Course Description
This class teaches all aspects of preventive maintenance and the proper techniques of all the basic service in the automotive industry. Instruction is given in preventive maintenance including the changing of vehicle fluids, proper tire dismounting, mounting, and balancing, basic electrical theory, the R&R(Remove and Replace) of shocks, fuel filters, fuel pumps, drive belts, starter motors, alternators, and spark plugs. Basic exhaust welding and basic diagnostic skills are also covered.

Certificate
Completion of this course certifies proficient automotive preventive maintenance and service skills based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Technical Competency is available upon request.

  • Demonstrate the proper preventive maintenance techniques for changing a vehicles fluids
  • Demonstrate the proper techniques and knowledge of basic underhood services
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and testing of basic electrical theory
  • Demonstrate the proper techniques for inspecting and servicing exterior lights
  • Diagnose and repair wheels and tires
  • Demonstrate removal and replacement of shock absorbers, fuel filters, starter motors, and alternators
  • Demonstrate the safe and proper technique of exhaust welding

This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.

Course Length
The estimated length of this course is 150 hours.
Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.

Specific Course Admission Requirements
There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Transportation Technology Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services.

West Valley Training Center: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday - Thursday,
                                           8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday

Tuition and Fees
Tuition is based on the number of enrolled classroom hours. High school students are exempt from tuition, but are responsible for course and program fees and the cost of textbooks.
