Course: Practical Shop Applications

Course Description
This course teaches the proper use and edentification of hand and power tools, the safe and proper lifting of vehicles using jacks, jack stands, and hoists, use of taps and dies, torque wrenches, use of precision measuring instruments, automotive manual uses, and estimating customer vehicle repairs.

Certificate
Completion of this course certifies proficient understanding and application of basic shop techniques and procedures based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Technical Competency is available upon request.

  • Use and maintenance of basic hand tools and shop equipment
  • Demonstrate the proper and safe uses of jacks, jack stands, and vehicle hoists
  • Demonstrate the proper techniques and use of fasteners and their related tools
  • Demonstrate the proper handling and use of precision measuring devices
  • Demonstrate the proper techniques in the use of service and labor and time manuals

This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.

Specific Course Admission Requirements
There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Transportation Technology Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services.

West Valley Training Center: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday - Thursday,
                                           8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday

Tuition and Fees
Tuition is based on the number of enrolled classroom hours. High school students are exempt from tuition, but are responsible for course and program fees and the cost of textbooks.
