Course: Media Ethics and Law

Course Description
Information technology has revolutionized the way we conduct business. This has created many unforeseen circumstances that necessitate new legal and ethical considerations. Important issues like privacy, free speech, and protection of intellectual property have taken on new meaning and significance in the information age. This course is intended to help deal with those circumstances that could lead to legal or ethical complications.

Certificate
Completion of this course certifies proficient understanding of media law and ethical practices based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Technical Competency is available upon request.

Competencies (skills you will learn)

  • Recognize and outline the main areas of ethical concern in the IT industry
  • Discuss the societal impact of information technology and the influence of ethical behavior (or the lack thereof) on the way business is conducted
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the mechanisms in place for dealing with ethical issues in IT
  • Outline and discuss the main areas of law that pertain to the Internet
  • Explain how those laws apply to the process of creating web sites and projects for the web
  • Explain how those laws apply to the process of doing business on the Internet
  • Identify some of the emerging areas of Internet law and discuss the current status and thinking regarding the law and those issues

This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.

There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Media Technology Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services.

Course Location and Schedule
Salt Lake Campus: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday -Thursday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday

Tuition is based on the number of enrolled classroom hours. High school students are exempt from tuition, but are responsible for course and program fees and the cost of textbooks.
