Course: Technical Essentials

Course Description
This course teaches the basic functions and components of basic automotive systems. Instruction is given in the basic design of manual and automatic transmissions, differentials, drive axles, engines, brakes, suspension systems, tires, emissions controls, lighting, and fuses. General vehicle inspection is also covered.

Certificate
Completion of this course certifies proficient essential automotive maintenance skills based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Technical Competency is available upon request.

  • Identify components and demonstrate basic functions of the automobile's basic systems, including:
    • service and labor and time manuals
    • automatic transmissions
    • manual transmissions
    • engines
    • differentials and drive axles
    • brakes
    • suspension systems
    • tires
    • emissions controls
    • lighting systems and fuses
  • Inspect and identify systems and components with vehicle on the ground and under the vehicle's hood
  • Inspect and identify systems and components on the undercarriage of vehicles

This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.

Course Length
The estimated length of this course is 120 hours.
Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.

Specific Course Admission Requirements
There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Transportation Technology Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services.

West Valley Training Center: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday - Thursday,
                                           8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday

Tuition and Fees
Tuition is based on the number of enrolled classroom hours. High school students are exempt from tuition, but are responsible for course and program fees and the cost of textbooks.
