Course: Engine Performance I

Course Description
This is the first part of a two course series. This course focuses on diagnosing engine conditions, and the operation and repairing of ignition systems. This class will teach detailed training in all aspects of diagnosis and repair of automotive engine performance systems. Instruction is given in all aspects of engine performance including but not limited to fuel injection systems, carburetor systems, ignition systems, computer controls, emissions systems, and exhaust systems. Oscilloscope operation and waveform analysis is also covered.

This course conforms to ASE/NATEF standards.

Certificate
Completion of this course certifies proficient automotive engine diagnostic and repair skills based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Technical Competency is available upon request. This course, when taken with Engine Performance II, will also prepare you to take the ASE Engine Certification Test.

  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair general engine mechanical conditions
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair distributor type and distributorless ignition systems
  • Operate an oscilloscope and analyze ignition oscilloscope waveforms

This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.

Course Length
The estimated length of this course is 120 hours.
Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.

Specific Course Admission Requirements
There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Transportation Technology Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services.

West Valley Training Center: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday - Thursday,
                                           8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday

Tuition and Fees
Tuition is based on the number of enrolled classroom hours. High school students are exempt from tuition, but are responsible for course and program fees and the cost of textbooks.
