Course: Microbiology & Urinalysis

Course Description
This course teaches the student proper handling and performance of microbiology and urinalysis testing.

Certificate
Completion of this course certifies proficient microbiology and urinalysis skills based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Technical Competency is available upon request.

This course fulfills requirements for the following Programs:

Competencies (skills you will learn)

  • Properly collect microbiological specimens including throat and wound cultures
  • Properly plate specimens
  • Properly perform a bacterial smear
  • Properly perform a Gram stain
  • Properly Instruct a patient for the collection of a clean-catch urine
  • Properly Instruct a patient for the collection of a for a 24-hour urine
  • Properly apply a pediatric urine collector
  • Properly perform a urine dipstick and understand the test implications
  • Properly perform a microscopic urine
  • Properly Instruct a patient for the collection of a sputum specimen
  • Properly Instruct a patient for the collection of a stool specimen

This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.

There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Health Care Technology Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services.

Salt Lake Campus: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday - Thursday
Horizonte Instruction & Training Center: Monday - Friday, school hours
Tooele County: Monday - Friday, schedule varies

Tuition and Fees
Tuition is based on the number of enrolled classroom hours. High school students are exempt from tuition, but are responsible for course and program fees and the cost of textbooks.
