Course: Principles of Design

Course Description
Students will be introduced to the basic principles and elements of design including line, shape, format, etc. Students will complete assignments designed to apply the concepts introduced in each section. Students will be introduced to the color wheel and color harmony and various forms of type and how they can be used to communicate ideas effectively. Students will understand the design process and apply it to creative solutions.

Certificate
Completion of this course certifies proficient understanding and application of the design process based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Technical Competency is available upon request.

Competencies (skills you will learn)

  • Understand the basic principles and elements of design
  • Knowledge of basic color theory
  • Knowledge of the basic elements of typography
  • Be able to follow the “design process,” i.e., thumbnails, roughs and comps
  • Understand how to critique work

This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.

There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Media Technology Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services.

West Valley Campus: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday -Thursday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday

Tuition is based on the number of enrolled classroom hours. High school students are exempt from tuition, but are responsible for course and program fees and the cost of textbooks.
